Plastic Packaging

The Triumph of ‘Compostable’ for TIG

At Total Image Group, we use 100% home-compostable plastic satchels, which means it’s entirely different from traditional ‘biodegradable’ plastics.

Compostable materials are crafted from natural plant starch, which naturally decomposes in microbe-rich, oxygen-rich environments, such as composting systems.

Our TIG plastic bags comply with the AS 5810-2010 standard, requiring a minimum of 90% biodegradation over 12 months.

The AS5810-certified home compostable plastic disintegrates within 180 days and fully biodegrades in 12 months, converting most plastic to CO2, water, and valuable compost.

Proper Disposal of

Compostable Packaging

To maximise the benefits of compostable packaging,
it’s crucial to dispose of it correctly.

Home compostable bags, while non-recyclable,
break down naturally in the right conditions.
However, infrastructure limitations may mean
placing them in general waste,
where they will degrade more slowly
but still contribute to sustainability goals.

Local Council Collection

Check with your local council regarding the
acceptance of AS5810 or AS4736
bin liners in green bins, as processing methods vary.

FYI – Australia has two compostability standards: AS 4736 and AS 5810.

AS 4736-2006 (Industrial Compostability): This standard evaluates plastics in industrial composting facilities, which operate at higher temperatures. It demands 90% biodegradation in 180 days, disintegration into <2mm pieces in 12 weeks, non-toxic compost, absence of hazardous substances, and >50% organic materials.

AS 5810-2010 (Home Compostability): Plastic materials complying with this standard must undergo stringent testing, ensuring a minimum of 90% biodegradation, no toxic effects, and >50% organic content. Approved products bear the Home Compostable logo.

At TIG we make informed choices when it comes to plastic packaging, opting for compostable options that align with eco-friendly standards, help reduce environmental impact and foster sustainability.
